About the Architect: Donald Wexler

Donald Wexler (1926–2015) was one of the defining architects of Palm Springs desert modernism. After training in the Los Angeles office of Richard Neutra, he came to Palm Springs in 1952 to work with William Cody, then practiced here for nearly six decades — first as Wexler & Harrison, later as Donald A. Wexler Associates.

Wexler is best known for pioneering prefabricated steel-frame houses in the desert: his 1960s all-steel homes at the north edge of Palm Springs are now internationally acclaimed and protected as Class One Historic Sites. His public work shaped the city too, including the main terminal of Palm Springs International Airport in the mid-1960s. In 2008 he received a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, and in 2011 the Palm Springs Art Museum celebrated his career with the exhibition Steel and Shade: The Architecture of Donald Wexler.
